Youth Found Deceased After Untrue Allegations of Stealing Ashes
One teenage boy was discovered deceased just days following being wrongly blamed of taking the cremated remains of a deceased infant during a burglary, a coroner's inquiry has learned.
Heartbreaking Discovery
The young boy's parents found his body in his room at his Connah's Quay home on 19 November 2021.
Untrue Allegations Start
The inquest learned how his mother received a communication on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a woman inquiring if her son was her child. The message stated: "Inform him appreciation for burgling my flat."
In a testimony read to the proceedings, Lisa Lloyd said the individual had been in the media, asserting her baby's ashes had been taken in a break-in - a claim which was untrue.
Law Enforcement Investigation
An investigation report from police later determined the supposed burglary complainant had "lied to police" and "it now appears that said items was not stolen in the beginning".
Media reports about the alleged taken ashes generated social media responses, and although the teenager was not identified in the messages, his mother said individuals "knew it was him".
The "online posts were really upsetting", she said.
Mental Wellbeing Effect
She added that her son had been diagnosed with moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that condition, other individuals' views really were important to him.
"This must have hurt him deeply," she commented, "especially when this was untrue".
The teenager was detained at his residence, but nothing was discovered. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later released under investigation.
Authorities said they would be in touch, the hearing learned, but had not contacted the relatives by the moment of his death.
Isolation and Anxiety
His mother said her son "became isolated" after the arrest and "would keep asking me whether I had heard anything from the police", because his ADHD meant sometimes "certain periods could feel like days".
When she spoke to him about the supposed incident, she said her son informed her he had gone into the residence because the woman who lived there had said he could use the bathroom anytime he wanted, but denied taking anything.
Online Harassment
In a joint statement between her and her husband, the mother said her son was being bullied digitally after the allegations.
The inquest learned that one young adult encouraged Kai to kill himself.
She had no worries on the night before he died, explaining how she had heard him "chuckling and teasing".
She described him as a "compassionate, loving" young man, and said her "relatives is totally devastated".
He had been "obviously concealing his worries", she stated, noting that he could not stand to have anyone "think bad of him".
Educational Reaction
The hearing received testimony from school staff at Connah's Quay High School.
On 8 November, she "heard some students talking that Kai had been arrested and that was the initial I learned".
"He told me... he'd was innocent," she continued.
After the discussion, the staff member said she called Kai's family landline and left a message saying she had spoken to the student about the allegations.
The court learned his family said they did not receive that communication.
Official Conclusion
Senior investigator told the inquest he would await reports regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with suspects with ADHD, before deciding whether he should make a avoidance of subsequent fatalities report.
Delivering a descriptive conclusion, he stated: "Around November 8th, 2021, unsupported allegations were made against the teenager, a young individual.
"Probably falsehoods were subsequently exaggerated and amplified through the platform of social media.
"During November 11th, he was interviewed by the authorities and after his interview he was released while investigations proceeded."
The coroner concluded: "There is no evidence that the acts or omissions of any organization caused or added to his passing and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted act it is impossible to determine his purpose."
